Vaughn Curtis "Vic" Fisher

January 18, 1938 — June 29, 2014

Vaughn Curtis Fisher, (Vic Fisher), 76 of Weaverville, received his sweet release from his valiant 12 year battle with Leukemia on June 29, 2014. He was a son of the late Rev. Vaughn Curtis Fisher, Sr. and Carrie Briggs Fisher and was preceded in death by his parents and brothers, Ralph, Fred and Howard Fisher and sister Nina Mae Reece. Surviving are his loving and devoted wife of 57 years, Effie Johnston Fisher, his partner who selflessly walked with him through fire and cared for his needs of spirit and flesh; his daughters Vickie Davis and Judy King, son, Nate Fisher (Brenda), sisters Grace Buckner (Frank) of Alexander, Eileen Griffin of Mars Hill, Iva Glen Green (Clenard) of Weaverville and Helen Griffin (Claude) of Mars Hill; 7 grandchildren, Kelly Waddell, Tina Waddell, Amy Waddell, Josh Fisher, Chelsey Fisher of Asheville and Spencer and Dylan King of Ogden, Utah, 8 great-grandchildren and many loving nieces and nephews. Following graduation from Marshall High School, where he was a member of the football team, Best Citizen, honor graduate and voted Most Likely to Succeed, Vic moved to Detroit, Michigan and began his career as a bagboy for Wrigleys grocery store. He was employed by Allied Supermarkets for 16 years in various capacities throughout Michigan and the Southeast. Vic joined Ingles Supermarkets in Asheville in 1972 and held several positions including store manager, district manager and Vice President-Sales Manager. He became the President and Chief Operating Officer in December 1996. Mr. Fisher also served on the Board of Directors of the North Carolina Food Dealers Association and was awarded Grocer of the Year by the N.C. Food Dealers Association in 2000. He retired from Ingles in December 2002 and enjoyed traveling with his wife and adventures with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Vic was a devoted family man who had a way of looking at the positive side of things and providing a clever phrase at just the right moment. He knew his Bible well, tithed regularly, respected his country, always selected the most beautifully written cards for his wife, told his family and friends he loved them, had a tremendous work ethic and strength of character. Vic enjoyed music of the Blackwood Brothers, Gaithers and many other gospel groups as well as Johnny Cash, Merle Haggard, Willie Nelson and George Jones. He loved getting to know people and encouraged them to share their stories with him and he, himself, was a talented storyteller who never let the truth get in the way of a good story. So many have told us over the years how he inspired them in some way. We loved him, respected him and will honor him for the rest of our lives. We are so grateful to those who gave Vic their caring attention and tenderness at Asheville Hematology & Oncology: Dr. Don Jackson, Sunshine, Debbie and Tofu as well as Asheville Urological Associates doctors and staff. He appreciated all your efforts and wanted you to know it meant so very much to him. The family felt so much gratitude to the staff of John F. Keever Solace Center for their tender care of Vic and his family. Our special thanks to Danny Hawkins who made such a loving and peaceful environment for us. The family is sincerely thankful to those who called to wish him well, sent cards and prayed for Vic over many years. This all brought comfort and strength to him throughout his battle. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, July 3rd at 2 pm at West Asheville Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Stan Welch, Rev. Gary Coates and Allen Pounders officiating. Burial will follow at West Memorial Park in Weaverville. The family will receive friends on Wednesday evening, July 2nd from 5:00 pm to 8:00 pm at The Chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home, 1428 Patton Avenue, Asheville, NC, and also 1 hour prior to the service at the church.
