Valerie Surrett

May 9, 1930 — February 20, 2014

Candler Valerie Thelma Grooms Surrett, 83, of 4 Liberty Circle, went to be with her Lord on Thursday, February 20, 2014 at the John F. Keever, Jr. Solace Center. A native of Madison County, she had resided in Buncombe County most of her life and was a Private Duty Nurse and a member of New Morgan Hill Baptist Church. Mrs. Surrett was a loving and devoted mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend. She was a faithful and dedicated Pastors wife for over 60 years. Mrs. Surrett was a daughter of the late Walter W. Grooms and Bonnie Naomi Baldwin Grooms. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Orville, Latt and Garrison; sisters, Pearl, May and Artie and son-in-law, Mickey Allen. Surviving are her husband of 66 years as of May 8, 2014, Rev. Claude Surrett of the home; daughter, Judy Lewis Allen of Candler; son, Gary Surrett and wife Becky of Candler; sister, Velma Christine Riddle of Chatham, VA; brothers, Harry Bo Grooms of Asheville and Lawrence Grooms of Johnson City, TN; grandchildren, Josh Lewis and wife Kelia, Megan Lewis Morgan and husband Phillip and Erin Surrett; great grandchildren, Addison, Hailey, Lauren, Milo, David, Samuel and Lucy and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Saturday, February 22, 2014 in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home with Rev. Ricky Wolfe officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
