Arden Toby Ray PawPaw Shook, 82, of 182 Locust Court, passed away Friday, July 3, 2015 at the NC State Veterans Nursing Home. A native of Newton, NC, he had resided in Spruce Pine prior to moving to Buncombe County in 1966. He was the son of the late Vester Carl Shook and Maude Ella Hartzoge Shook. Mr. Shook was also preceded in death by three brothers: Robert L. Shook, Vernon Shook and Knox Shook. He was a member of Biltmore UMC and a Korean War Veteran serving in the U.S. Air Force. Mr. Shook was an Instructor of Mathematics at A-B Technical College from 1966 to 2000 of which during this time had served as Chairman of the Math Department. He was a former Scout Master with Boy Scouts of America, Troop #3, West Asheville, member of the Rhododendron Civitan Club where he was a past President and Civitan of the Year in 1991 and formerly had served as Treasurer of the North Canton Fire Department. Surviving are his wife of 61 years, Thelma Jane Ayers Shook of the home; daughters, Mellanie Jane Shook of Arden and Katrina Muffin Shook of Banner Elk; son, George R. Shook and wife, Laura of Nashville, NC; five grandchildren, Anna Cherie Shook, George Brandon Shook, Silas Riordan, Callan Riordan, and Bobby Griffis; one great granddaughter, Kaydin Shook; three special grandchildren: Amy Kirkley, Laura Garrison, and Sarah Thomas; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Tuesday, July 7, 2015 in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home with Rev. Dr. Dewey Thomas and Rev. Sonny Reavis officiating. The family will receive friends from 12:30 1:45 PM Tuesday prior to services at the funeral home. Entombment will be held at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Hendersonville. Pallbearers will be David McCurry, David Crawford, Matt Rhea, Timmy Hindman, James Bell, David Harrell and Matt Miller. Military rites will be conducted by the Henderson County VFW Honor Guard and the NC National Guard Honor Guard. The family would like to say a special Thank You to the Adult Day Care Center of CarePartners and the NC State Veterans Nursing Home for their love and care given to the family.
