Candler - Thursey Mae Bowman Penland, 76, of 61 Surrett Rd. died Monday, January 17, 2005 at the St. Joseph Campus of Mission Hospitals following a short illness. A native of Surry County, she had resided in Buncombe County for most of her life and was of the Baptist faith. Mrs. Penland was the daughter of the late Perlie Bowman and Rose Belle Chandler Bowman and was the wife of the late Ernest McClellan Penland who died January 9, 1991. She was also preceded in death by her brothers, Junior and Bill Bowman and her sister, Frances Jeffords. Surviving are her daughters, Beatrice Fisher of Candler, Rose Ann Mashburn of Franklin, Ernestine Moore of Candler, Margie Frady of Leicester and Kathy Hensley of Candler; son, George Ernest Buster Penland of the home; sisters. Ellen Hartness of Kannapolis and Betty Craig of High Shoals; 12 grandchildren, 18 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild. Funeral services will be held at 2 P.M. Wednesday in the Anders-Rice Funeral Home Chapel with the Revs. Homer Moore and Harold Webb officiating. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Pallbearers will be David Frady, Jr., Kelby Mashburn, Bobby Lee Fisher, Dwight Fisher, Mickey Lee Gibson and Jesse Gibson. Honorary pallbearers will be Will Fisher, Adam Fisher, Brandon Fisher, Michael Justice, William Justice, Tony Rogers, Anthony Messer, Edward Che Bishop, Kenny Bishop, Jr., Bryan Jones and Patrick Howard. The family will receive friends from 7-9 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home. At other times the family will be at the home of Ernestine Moore, 61-A Surrett Rd., Candler.
