Asheville Thomas Robert Penland, 90, of 261 Bear Creek Road, went to be with his Lord on Friday, January 12, 2018. Mr. Penland was a lifelong resident of Buncombe County. He retired in 1993 from Dave Steel following over 40 years of service. He attended Hominy Baptist Church and was a long time member of Craven Street and Westwood Baptist Churches. He was a WWII US Navy veteran, having served on the USS Albany. He was the son of the late Gordon Lafayette Penland and Edna Brank Penland and husband of Mary Frances Davis Penland who died July 1, 2005. He was also preceded in death by his 6 siblings. Surviving are his wife, Jean Satterfield Penland whom he married May 2, 2009; daughters, Brenda Candler and her husband, the late Gerald M. of Myrtle Beach, SC and Deb Bowman and husband Robin of Leicester; son, Gary Penland and wife Brenda of Candler; grandchildren, Austin Penland (Meagan), Brandon Penland, Senna Dill (Mike), Dawn Reynolds (Andy), Carey Ballard (Mike), Leslie Smith (Jason) and Cassy Stout (Chris); great grandchildren, Cloie, Braxton, Olyvia, Mikayla, Leighton, Malia, Hadleigh, Lawson, Sage, Addison, Peighton, Rowan and Dylan; step children, Diane Satterfield of Candler and Donna Shook and husband Steve of Marion; step grandsons, Hunter and Connor Shook; sister-in-law, Anna Dee Davis of Candler and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11 AM Monday, January 15, 2018 in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home with Rev. Joe Yelton officiating. Burial will follow in Pisgah View Memorial Park with military rites conducted by the US Navy. The family will receive friends from 9:30 AM to 10:45 AM Monday prior to the services at the funeral home.
