Waynesville Theda Garrett Crawford of 671 South Haywood Street died Wednesday, April 22, 2009. She was a native of Haywood County and the daughter of the late George and Florence Bennett Garrett both of Haywood County. A graduate of Western Carolina University, Mrs. Crawford taught school in Waynesville for a number of years. She and her husband retired from Crawford Funeral Home in 1985, which they owned and operated. Mrs. Crawford was a licensed funeral director and worked in all phases of funeral work and formerly served as secretary of the Western District. She was active in civic and church work and a member of the First Baptist Church of Waynesville. Mrs. Crawford was a member and past Worthy Matron of Waynesville Chapter of the Order of Eastern Star, was a member and past president of the Waynesville Womens Club, was a member and past president of the American Legion Auxiliary and was a member of the Hugh Rogers Chapter of the D.A.R. of Haywood County. Her husband, Howell Way Crawford who died in 1996 and also 3 sons, Howell Way Crawford II, John and Herbert Crawford and 3 brothers, Bennett, Thomas Allen and Sam Garrett, preceded her in death. Survivors include one son, Samuel Lee Crawford and daughter-in-law, Rita Darlene Gillett Crawford of Waynesville; 2 grandchildren, David Howell Crawford and wife Michele Dawn Lambert Crawford of Waynesville and Heidi Crawford Jones and husband Daniel Anthony Jones of Winston-Salem; three great-grandchildren, Hannah Michele Crawford, David Howell Crawford, Jr. and Daniel Anthony Jones, Jr. and one brother, Charles Taylor Garrett of Asheville also survive her. Memorial services with the Waynesville Order of the Eastern Star participating will be held in the Chapel of the First Baptist Church of Waynesville on Saturday, April 25, 2009 at 4 P.M. with the Rev. Dr. Robert Prince, III presiding. Private graveside services will be held at Garrett Hillcrest Memorial Gardens, formally Crawford Memorial Gardens, with Wilson Whitehead, Daryl Triplett, Jerry Pace, Mike Ferguson, Charles Ferguson, Stephen Smith and Benny Messer serving as pallbearers. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to ones favorite charity. Anders-Rice Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
