Asheville - Sallie Juanita Wincie Gurley Sluder, 71, of 25 Panorama Drive, passed away unexpectedly on Wednesday, August 31, 2005 at her residence. A native and lifelong resident of Buncombe County, she was a Primary Education Teacher for many years in Buncombe County. She had attended Berea College, and graduated from Western Carolina University. Wincie was a member of Elkwood United Methodist Church. Her passion was the piano, and would play for anyone who would listen. She was the daughter of the late Benjamin Harrison and Sallie Burgin Gurley and the widow of Johnnie Jackson Sluder, who passed away in 1979. She was also preceded in death by two sisters: Rachel Gurley and Martha Gurley Griffin; and two brothers: Benjamin Harrison Gurley, Jr. and William Quinton Gurley, Sr. Surviving are her daughter, Amy Sluder Woody of Marion; her sister, Faye Gurley Hamlin and husband Conley Pete Hamlin of Marion; her sister-in-law, Colleen Gurley of Waynesville; nine nieces and nephews, and several great nieces and great nephews. Funeral services will be held at 3 PM Saturday at Elkwood United Methodist Church with the Rev. Enoch Ball, Jr. officiating. Burial will be in Green Hills Cemetery.
