Candler - Ruth Goldsmith Houghton, 93, a resident of Pisgah Manor Health Care since 1999, died Wednesday, March 2, 2005 at her residence. Mrs. Houghton was born December 30, 1911 in Manhattan, NY to Jennie Edwards Hudson and Paul Harold Hudson. She was the eldest of four children, including the late Edward Warren Hudson (Elaine Duclos), Margaret Hudson Tuohig (James Elton) of Williamsburg, VA and the late John Henry Hudson (the late Louise Spencer). She grew up in Upper Montclair, NJ and graduated from Mount Holyoke College in South Hadley, MA in 1933 with a Bachelor of Arts in Religion and minor in French. She spent her junior year studying in Paris. After earning her Masters Degree from Columbia Teachers College she work for the Presbyterian Board of National Missions which brought her to a faculty position at the Asheville Farm School (now Warren Wilson College). Later she participated in several public relations tours on behalf of the school. She married Basil Manly Goldsmith, of Greenville, SC, and resided in Rutherford, NJ. Their children are; Robert Manly Goldsmith (Nancy Dolan) of Fairfax, VA; David Warren Goldsmith (Janice Brown) of Candler; Mary Ellen DuBose (C. Benjamin) of Marrietta, GA; and Janet Ruth Goldsmith (late Albert Wayne Welch) of Athol, MA. Basil Goldsmith died in 1957. She earned her Masters in Reading Education from William Patterson State University in 1970 and taught remedial reading in the Title I program in Rutherford, NJ. She married Roger Pease Houghton, formerly of Springfield, MA, in 1978 and moved to Clifton, NJ with summers in Hill, NH. During the next ten years she welcomed each of her 8 grandchildren, Brian John Goldsmith, Mark Brown Goldsmith, Marie Charlotte DuBose Maynard (John), Steven James Goldsmith, Ruth Goldsmith Welch, David Benjamin DuBose, William Basil Goldsmith and Albert Wayne Welch. She also came to know Rogers sister, Barbara Baacke (George), son, the late George Houghton (Shirley), grandson Paul Houghton, granddaughter Patty Troll (Bruce) and great granddaughter, Lindsey Troll. Roger Houghton died in 1988. Friends may join the family for a celebration of Ruths life from 4 to 7 p.m. Saturday, March 12, 2005, at Anders-Rice Funeral Home. A memorial service in New Jersey will be planned for a later date.
