Candler – Roy Edward Chatham, 77, passed away Tuesday, March 29, 2022 at his residence. A native and lifelong resident of Buncombe County, he retired May 17, 2004, following 34 years of service as Foreman of the Bridge and Building Department with Norfolk-Southern Railroad. He was an avid race car driver and former Crew Chief with 4 decades of racing and 50 years of association to the racing family. We would like to express our gratitude to the sponsors, car drivers and racing crew members for their love and support over the many years, and also express our sincere appreciation for the love and support from his friends and community. He was an avid outdoor sportsman and loved hunting both in the US and Canada. Mr. Chatham was the son of the late James Herman Chatham and Janie Lou Dalton Chatham. Surviving are his wife whom he married June 20, 1964, Joyce Summey Chatham of the home; sister, Betty Jo Sherlin of Landrum, SC, and 2 nephews. Funeral services will be held at 6:00 PM Thursday, March 31, 2022 in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home, with Dr. Keith Sherlin officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following services at the funeral home. Graveside services will be held at 11 AM Friday, April 1, 2022 at Forest Lawn Memorial Park.
