Asheville Robert Wade Mathews, 61, of 12 Altamont Ridge Drive, passed away Sunday, December 13, 2009 at his home. A native of Newport News, VA, he served two tours of duty during Vietnam War as a Medical Corpsman in Germany and Fort Bragg. Always caring deeply for others, once discharged, he continued serving the medical community as an LPN in local Asheville hospitals and convalescent centers until his own health began to fail. Surviving are his children: Mark Mathews of Brevard, David Mathews of Florence, SC, and Angela Buchanan of Rosman; grandchildren: Joseph, Nicole, Dylan, Benjamin, Alexis, Mark, Jr., Aubrey, Orrin, and Ryan; brothers: Dallas Mathews of Asheville and Jim Mathews and wife Karyn of Raleigh; sister, Juana Teague of Asheville; and many nieces and nephews. Bob to some, Wade to others, was the ultimate gentle spirit who laughed easily and loved unconditionally. He will be truly missed by all who were fortunate to be forever locked inside his heart.
