Fairview - Robert Calvin Newton, Jr., 56, went to be with Jesus Friday, November 21, 2003 a Mission Hospitals. A native of Asheville, he graduated from Lee Edwards High School where he played basketball, baseball, and football. He was voted Best All Around Athlete his senior year. While at Hall Fletcher Junior High, he won the Bobby Owens Award for scholarship, citizenship, and athletics. He attended Western Carolina University on a baseball scholarship and was a member of Delta Alpha Chapter, Kappa Alpha Order. He maintained a close bond with his Delta Alpha brothers. Robert worked in the medical supplies and testing field until his disabilities required that he retire. He was a member of Central United Methodist Church and the Inquirers Sunday School Class. He was a Lion and served on the Cataloochee Ski Patrol for many years. A proud member of the Western North Carolina Parrothead Club, he did his part to help his club win the national award for community service recently in Key West, Florida. Robert was also a Big Brother to John Eldreth, of Asheville, for four years through the Big Brothers/Big Sisters program. He was a very kind person and never met a stranger. Many folks have stories of how he helped them in their hour of need, at a moments notice. He will be greatly missed and never forgotten. Robert was preceded in death by his father, Robert Calvin Newton, Sr. Surviving are his devoted mother, Frances Newton Stevens and her husband Harry of Asheville; wife, Linda Mullis Newton of the home; step children, Brandon Evans and his wife Cheryl of Cary, Shannon Evans Haynes and husband Jeff of Waynesville; step grandchildren, Addison Evans, Grant Evans, and Elizabeth Haynes; cousins, Richard Greene and wife JoAnne of Asheville; John Sams and wife Marsha and their son Tyler of Arden, Jeanie Christenbury and husband Jimmy and their daughters Kelli and Lauren of Mint Hill; Lorraine Zachary and husband Frank of Bend, OR; special aunt, Bette Gaines and husband Bob of Charlotte; mother-in-law, Johnnie Mullis of Monroe; brother-in-law, Randy Mullis and his wife Janet and step-niece Beverly Sexton all of Monroe; step niece Bonnie Dandridge and husband Jason of Waxhaw. A celebration of Roberts life will be held at 4 PM Monday at Central United Methodist Church with the Rev. Rob Blackburn officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. A private graveside service will be held at Pisgah View Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Diabetic Assoc., NC Affiliate, 434 Fayetteville Street Mall, 2 Hanover Square, Suite 1600, Raleigh, NC 27601.
