R. Wayne Mathis

July 8, 1912 — September 18, 2008

Asheville Robert Wayne Mathis, 96, of 35 Skyland Circle, passed away Thursday, September 18, 2008 at Emerald Ridge Rehab and Care Center. A native of Madison County, he had resided most of his life in Buncombe County. He was a salesman with Southern Bakeries, and a member of the Civilian Conservation Corps Company 428 in Brevard. Mr. Mathis was the son of the late Joe Marion and Alice Maney Mathis. Surviving are his wife of 68 years, Kate Clontz Mathis, of the home; daughters: Sandra Mathis Rogers and her late husband, Bob Rogers of Houston, TX, and Mary Alice Mathis Hunter and husband Charlie of Asheville; grandchildren: Wendy Reed, Robin Palmer, Katy Braren, Jeff Hunter, and Jason Hunter; and 11 great-grandchildren. Friends are invited to attend a celebration of Waynes life that will be held at 6 PM Thursday, September 25 at his home. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in memory of Wayne and his son-in-law Robert B. Rogers, Jr. to the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, PO Box 301439, Houston, TX 77230-1439.
