Asheville Mildred Virginia Bowles Cunliffe, 92, of 18 Springside Road passed away Saturday, May 22, 2010 at her home. A lifelong resident of Buncombe County. She was instrumental in starting the original Skyland Village Library in 1961 of which she served as a volunteer and later became a paid employee. She retired from Pack Library System Skyland Branch in 1986 and was a member of Calvary Episcopal Church of Fletcher since 1936. She was a charter member of the Ladies Auxiliary of the Skyland Fire Department where she served at numerous positions and was a charter member of the Golden Girls, formerly the Western North Carolina Pilots Association Auxiliary. Mrs. Cunliffe was a daughter of the late William Richard and Bessie Virginia Mayer Bowles and wife of Hillis Wilmont Cunliffe who died June 17, 1984. Surviving are her daughter, Lucy C. Hall and husband Jimmy of Arden; son, Hillis M. Cunliffe and wife Shirley of Millbrook, AL; sisters, Lillian Bowles of Skyland and Nancy Kaltenbach (George) of Hendersonville; brothers, William Bowles of Chesapeake, VA, Jack Bowles and Charles Bowles (Dab) both of Arden; grandchildren, Jennifer Hall, Barbara Hall (John Simpson) both of Arden, Michael Cunliffe (Jennifer West) of Birmingham, AL, Amy Smith (Will) and their son Ben of Cape Coral, FL. Memorial services will be held 11 A.M. Thursday at Calvary Episcopal Church with the Rev. Victor Mansfield officiating. The family will receive friends following services at the Parish House.
