Michael "Mike" Hayes

Candler Michael Lee Mike Hayes, 53, passed away Monday, February 5, 2018 at the Johnson City Medical Center. A lifelong resident of Buncombe County, Mike retired from the Buncombe County Schools following 30 years of service in the maintenance department. He was a member of Happy Valley Baptist Church. Mike was a loving husband and father. He was a great coach to all kids. He instilled so much knowledge in all who crossed his path. He loved everyone, and was loved by many people. Mike was the son of Richard Gabby Hayes, and the late Margaret Elaine Cricket Luther Hayes. He was also preceded in death by both sets of grandparents. In addition to his dad, surviving are his loving wife, Michelle Maxwell Hayes; his two sons who he cherished: Billy Hayes (Brooke) and Donnie Hayes; brother, Cliffton Hayes (Sherry), sister, Luann Meade (Barry); two loving aunts, four nieces and three nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM Friday in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home, with the Rev. Perry Burke and Rev. Dean Rice officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 6:30 8:30 PM Thursday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Christopher and Dana Reeve Foundation for Spinal Cord Injuries at www.christopherreeve.org, or to the family to assist with final expenses.
