Michael D. "Mike" Smith

May 5, 1925 — March 26, 2004

Asheville - Michael David Smith, Jr., 78, of 22 Ballantree Drive, died Friday March 26, 2004 at Memorial Mission Hospital. A lifelong resident of Buncombe County. He retired in 1996 as co-owner / owner and operator of R&W Inc. after 38 years. He was a member of Merrimon Ave. Baptist Church where he was a Deacon and had been involved in many activities. He was a member of the N.C. Baptist Men and the Baptist Lay Witness Foundation. He was involved in the N.C. Baptist Association and Baptist State Evangelism, a Trustee at Mars Hill College and was currently on the General Board of the Baptist State Convention. He was a Gideon since 1965 where he was active in many functions. He currently served as the Director of Evangelism with the Buncombe County Baptist Association. He served on the MANNA Food Bank Board and was currently on the Board of the WNC Rescue Ministry. He served on the Southern Baptist Convention Board for the International Mission as Trustee. He was a WWII veteran of the U.S. Navy having served in the South Pacific. Mr. Smith was the son of the late Michael David Smith, Sr. and Edna Maybelle Roberts Smith Surviving are his wife of 57 years Peggy S. Smith of the home; daughters, Cheryl Smith Bolick and husband Herb and Annette West Guthrie and husband Joe all of High Point; sons, M. David Smith, III and wife Sally of Asheville, Steven L. Smith and wife Patricia of Covington, GA. and Stuart J. Smith and wife Michelle of Arden; 13 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday at Merrimon Avenue Baptist Church with the Revs. Jim Russell, Tom Lomax, Gayle Brown and Dr. Billy Cline officiating. Burial will in Green Hills Cemetery with Bert Bolick, David Bolick, Christopher Smith, Charles Ledford, Chad Smith and Andy Lawson serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be members of Gideons International and Lay Witness Foundation. The family will receive friends from 4 to 7 P.M. Sunday at Anders-Rice Funeral Home.
