Asheville – Melba Jean Newton Alexander, 76, long time resident of Buncombe County, died peacefully at her home on Sunday, September 12, 2021 after an extended illness. Born in Granville County, NC, she moved to Buncombe upon her marriage to husband, Don Alexander in 1968. She was a mother, homemaker, and later a Teacher’s Assistant in Buncombe County Schools. In addition to her husband, she is survived by daughter, Leah Alexander (fiance’, Chuck Waycaster) of Candler; sons, Jeremy Alexander (Amy) of Weaverville and the Rev. John Alexander (Tonya) of Candler, she is also survived by ten grandchildren – Brody (Baylee), Shane, Colton and Briar Moss, Braylon Ward, and Jarrett, Jackson, Carissa, Sawyer and Lindsey Alexander, another grandson, baby Waycaster, is on the way. Also, brothers, William Newton (Ila) of Durham, and Roy and Cecil Newton of Granville County. In addition, she is survived by hundreds of extended family, former students, and friends, one of which summed up her life simply by saying, “to know her is to love her”. Graveside services will be held at 10:30 AM Wednesday, September 15, 2021 at Ridgeway Baptist Church Cemetery in Candler, with the Revs. Jackie Collins and Scott Sprinkle officiating. Serving as pallbearers will be all of her grandchildren.
