Matthew Steven Brown, 28, passed away on Wednesday, December 14, 2016 at the Memorial Campus of Mission Hospitals in North Carolina, where Matthew had resided for the past five years. A native of New Haven, CT, he resided in West Asheville for the past 2 years. Matt had studied at UNC-Asheville and was employed with Mellow Mushroom as a server, bartender, and lead singer. Matt was a kind hearted and caring person who enjoyed life, playing and writing music and poetry. He loved his family and friends. Matt was predeceased by his grandparents: Pearl and Oscar Brown, and Nancie and Leo Ratcliff; and his aunt, Shelia Brown. Surviving are his mother, Donna Schmidt of Asheville; father, Steven Brown and step-mother Tina Marie of Guilford, CT; step-sisters: Janelle (Sean) Carroll of Norman, OK, and Katie Chavez of Tulsa, OK; aunts: Paula Brown of Branford, CT, and Tamra Sheehan and her husband David; uncles: Tom Ratcliff, and Tim Ratcliff and his wife Sylvia; and by many extended family and friends. Surrounded by friends and family, Matthew Steven Brown left us behind for a new journey. He touched many hearts with his music, his kindness, and his friendship. He could make you laugh and would bring you up when you were down. He was fiercely loyal to his friends and family, and was a hard worker. He loved hiking in the mountains, singing loudly with his headphones on, having an audience, and playing guitar, keyboards and synth. A private memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, memorials of Matthew Brown may be made to: LifeShare Of The Carolinas, 5000D Airport Road, Charlotte, NC 28208, thank you.
