Fletcher - Mark Auldin Cody, Sr., 79, of 11 Wilkie Way, died unexpectedly Sunday May 18, 2008 at Park Ridge Hospital. Mark was born July 20, 1928 and graduated from Lee Edwards High School in 1945. He joined the U.S. Navy in 1948 and trained in San Diego, CA. He served on the destroyers USS Chevalier and USS Blue and on the battleship USS Iowa. Land duty included the Marshall Islands, Hawaii, Japan Korea and San Francisco, CA. He received Honorable Discharge from the U.S. Navy in 1952. He retired from the Asheville Citizen-Times in 1993 after 40 years of service. He was a member of Fletcher First Baptist Church. He was a son of the late William B. and Esther Naomi Cody and was also preceded in death by a brother, William E. Cody. Surviving are his wife, Emily Devlin Cody of the home; son, Mark Cody, Jr. and wife Judy of Arden; daughter, Yvonne Hechler and husband Jerry of Morven; grandchildren, Jerry Hechler II, Camile Cody and Carolyn Cody; brother, Robert F. Cody of Asheville and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 A.M. Wednesday at Anders-Rice Funeral Home with the Revs. Roy Waldroup and Harry Meadows officiating. Burial will be in Pisgah View Memorial Park with military rites by the Buncombe County Veterans Council Memorial Team. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 P.M. Tuesday at the funeral home.
