Asheville - Marilyn C. Spencer, 74, of Asheville, North Carolina passed away March 10, 2018 after an extended illness. Born March 23, 1943 in Pawtucket, Rhode Island, she was the daughter of the late Ruth Oulton Crawford and Earl S. Crawford. Marilyn was a graduate of East Providence High School, East Providence, RI. She married at the age of 19 and was a proud Air Force wife for 25 years. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree from Mississippi University for Women in Computer Science and later earned her Masters Degree from Johnson and Wales in Computer Education. Her career included teaching at the Community College of Rhode Island, Ocean State Business Institute, South College, and AB Tech Community College. She played the piano, taught piano lessons, sang in church choirs and was a past member of the Asheville Choral Society. She was preceded in death by her husband Col. James Douglas Spencer, USAF, brother Rick Crawford and sister Jane Schrader. She is survived by her loving children: her son Jeffrey Spencer of Asheville, NC; and her daughters Karen Wendelschaefer and her husband Jim of Grove City, PA; Susan Hopkins and her husband Randy of Oak Ridge, NC., and her beautiful grandchildren: Stefani and Kimmi Wendelschaefer, and Samantha and Ryan Hopkins, and her 3 beloved schnauzers. She is also survived by her family: her brothers Bruce Crawford, Steve Crawford, and Robert Crawford; her sister Nancy Allen and her sister-in-law Janet Bowden, along with several nieces and nephews. Anders-Rice Funeral home is assisting with arrangements. A private family celebration of life will be held at a future date.
