Marietta Crayton

March 17, 1918 — August 6, 2017

Asheville - Marietta Hollifield Crayton, 99, passed away Sunday, August 6, 2017 at the John F. Keever, Jr. Solace Center. A native of Madison County, Mrs. Crayton retired in 1979 following 30 years of service as a teacher in the Buncombe County Schools System, where she had taught at Barnardsville, West Buncombe, and Bell Elementary Schools. She was a member of Fellowship Asheville (formerly Reed Memorial Baptist Church), and, having been a pastors wife of 72 years, had taught at many levels of Sunday School. Mrs. Crayton was the daughter of the late McCulloch and Vessie Fox Hollifieild, and the wife of the late Rev. Lester Green Crayton, whom she married June 30, 1942. She was also preceded in death by her siblings: Ossie Hollifield, Flossie Hawkins and Alger Hollifield. Surviving are her daughter, Penelope C. Penny Herron and husband Roger of Acworth, GA; three grandchildren: Christina Summey and husband Dr. William Summey of Nashville, TN, Andrea Rene Herron of Sherman Oaks, CA, and Elizabeth Hatchett and husband Sam of Cincinnati, OH; three great-grandsons: Jonathan Summey and Christopher Summey of Nashville and Newton Green Hatchett of Cincinnati; and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM Friday at Fellowship Asheville Church (formerly Reed Memorial Baptist Church in Oakley), with the Rev. Jim Crayton and Fred Baker officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park, with graveside rites performed by Dr. William Summey. The family will receive friends from 10:00 10:50 AM Friday at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Ebenezer Gospel Mission to India, C/O Nancy Ingle, 3802 Trinity Court, Asheville, NC 28803. Anders-Rice Funeral Home is assisting Mrs. Craytons family.
