Margaret "Peggy" Shirey

ASHEVILLE - Margaret Elaine Peggy Shirey, 87 passed away Tuesday August 18, 2009 at her home. A native of Birmingham, AL., she attended public schools in Birmingham and Plonk School of Creative College in Asheville. She was a member of St. Marks Lutheran Church where she was a member of the choir for 32 years, taught Sunday School and Church School and was very active in church activities for many years. She volunteered at Aston Park Hospital for 16 years and was president of the P.T.A. at Leicester Grammar and High Schools for 3 years. She was a member of Buncombe County Medical Auxiliary for many years. She was the daughter of the late James Buchanan Johnson and Pauline Strickland Johnson Holcombe and the wife of the late John Luther Shirey, MD. She was also preceded in death by her son, John Luther Shirey, Jr. and her sister, Mary Elizabeth Bailey. Surviving are her grandchildren, Missy Hollifield of Hendersonville, Peggy Romero of Kaplan, LA and John Luther Shirey, III; great grandchildren, Austin Romero, Brooke Romero and Seth Shirey; niece, Paula Arrington; nephew Dr. Boyd Bailey, Jr. and special friends, Herman and Edna Cole and Jerry Brodeur. Graveside services will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday at Riverside Cemetery with Pastor Christopher Webb officiating.
