Asheville - Lothair Raymond Small, 83, passed away on Saturday, May 29, 2004 at Givens Estates Health Care Center after an extended illness. Born July 7, 1920 to George and Mary Fagel Small in Shelbyville, Indiana and the last of thirteen children, Mr. Small graduated from Ball State Teachers College in the spring of 1942 and immediately enlisted in the Navys Midshipmens School. Upon graduation from there, he was assigned to LST-2(Landing Ship Tank) and served as the ships line, watch and gunnery officer - eventually earning the rank of 1st Lieutenant. Lieutenant Small and LST-2 were assigned to the European theater and participated in the North African occupation, Sicilian occupation, Salerno landings, and participated in the heaviest action near Omaha Beach during the Normandy Invasion. After leaving the service, Mr. Small returned to Indiana and a long career in sales with the National Cash Register Company and Union Starch and later Miles Laboratories in Granite City, Illinois before purchasing the Karmelkorn franchise in the Asheville Mall in 1973. He was an active member of the 1st Church of Christ, Scientist in Asheville and the Christian Science Mother Church in Boston, Massachusetts. He is survived by his loving wife of almost 60 years, Jean Kathryn Monfort Small; son Todd Monfort Small of Ballwin, Missouri; daughter, Stacy Ann Small of Fletcher; grandson, Christopher Scott Small of Ballwin, Missouri; granddaughter, Krista Jean Small Wimberly of Smithville, Missouri; great-grandchild, Alden Elizabeth Small of Ballwin, Missouri. A family memorial service will be held at a later date in St. Louis, Missouri.
