Lewis W. Green

March 21, 1932 — October 24, 2008

Fairview Lewis Wallace Green, 76, passed away with his family by his side October 24, 2008. He was a native of Haywood County, NC and is best known as a writer and journalist. He published numerous stories and poems in journals and wrote and published eight books including the widely acclaimed And Scatter the Proud and the Korean War novel Spirit Bells. He also founded a number of local periodicals including the Native Stone and The Independent Torch. Mr. Green won several awards for news writing and investigative journalism. He taught creative writing and political science courses at a number of colleges including UNC-Asheville. He served in the United States Air Force and Marine Corps. He is a veteran of the Korean War where he was awarded five battle stars. He was a member of the Asheville Civitan Club and of the Chosin Few. He was the son of the late Clifford Wallace Green and Myrtle Wyatt Green. He is survived by his three sons, Brennan Green of Weaverville, Patrick Green of Fairview and Egan Green of Shawsville, VA, as well as two grandchildren, one sister, Carmen Jessup of Franklin and one brother, Sydney Green of Waynesville. Funeral servcies will be held 2 P.M. Thursday in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home with Minister, Eddie DeBruhl officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following services Thursday at the funeral home. Committal services will be held 12 Noon Friday at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Buncombe County Veterans Memorial Team.
