Asheville Kay Zachary, 89, passed away peacefully Friday, March 16, 2018 after several years at the Oaks at Sweeten Creek. She was an active participant in activities and had friends there and some very caring caregivers. She was a graduate of Asheville-Biltmore College and lived most of her life in Beaver Lake. Kay worked for many years at Buncombe County District Court. She enjoyed her work and her many friends there and she also did voluntary work through the years. Kay was the wife of the late Ray Zachary; daughter of the late Maude Cole Smith and Herbert Smith of Beaverdam and sister of the late Colonel Hugh Smith. She is survived by her daughter, Judi Hagan and son-in-law, Jim Hagan of Mills River and Little Bit and Rusty; 3 stepdaughters, Judy Holtcher of Minnesota, Carol Leppa of Phoenix and Jane Brattain of Minnesota/Phoenix; stepson, Johnny Zachary of Phoenix and many grandchildren, one of which has always been an important one in Kays life, Katie Hogan of Texas. To be included in Kays family is the family of Cricket Jarrett and Judi Johnson Hagans brother and sisters. The celebration of Kays life will be Saturday, March 24, 2018 at 2 PM in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home, followed by visitation with light refreshments in the parlor. Burial will be at 4 PM at Lewis Memorial Park on Beaverdam Road. Pallbearers will be Mike Jarrett, Barry Jarrett, Tim Jarvis, Jack Gravely, Roy Johnson and Robinson Sibayan. Kay loved flowers and she very much enjoyed the social activities at the Oaks at Sweeten Creek Road if you would like to contribute, or plant a flower for Kay in your yard.
