Katie Smith Sams

Candler - Katie Smith Sams, 88, of 109 Liberty Rd. died Thursday, December 11, 2003 at Pisgah Manor Health Care Center. A lifelong resident of Buncombe County , she was formerly employed with the Salvation Army and was a member of the West Asheville Salvation Army. Mrs. Sams was the daughter of the late Lillie Maude Ramsey Smith and the wife of the late Howard Richard Sams who died in 1985. She was also preceded in death by her sons, Billy and Richard Sams. Surviving are her daughter, Debra Joyce Padilla and husband Dan of Candler, sister, Frances Miller of Asheville; brother, Fred Smith and wife Mary Jo of Asheville; daughter-in-law, Elaine Sams of Asheville; grandchildren, Capt. David Sams, Phillip Padilla, and Katie Padilla. A memorial service will be held at 2 PM Saturday at the West Asheville Salvation Army Chapel with Capt. David Sams and Brigadier Martha Herring officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service. Anders-Rice Funeral Home is assisting the family.
