WOODFIN - Annie Kate Clontz Mathis, 86, of 35 Skyland Circle, passed away Thursday, September 10, 2009 at her home. Kate will be best remembered as a good and moral person who was loved by all. A native of Burke County, NC, she had resided in Buncombe County most of her life. She had numerous jobs and lastly as a Teachers Assistant to Waynette Sorrells at Woodfin Elementary School. She was a graduate of Woodfin High School and a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church. Kate was the daughter of the late Henry Everette Clontz and Mary Ellen Clontz and wife of Wayne Mathis who died September 18, 2008. She was also preceded in death by her son-in-law, Bobby Rogers; brothers, Howard, Homer, Henry and Glenn Clontz and sister, Ila Clontz Jervis. Kate was the last surviving member of her generation of the Clontz family of Woodfin. Surviving are her daughters, Sandra Mathis Rogers of Spring, TX and Mary Alice Mathis Hunter & husband, Charlie of Asheville; grandchildren, Wendy Reed, Robin Palmer, Katy Braren, Jeff Hunter and Jason Hunter; 12 great grandchildren; sisters-in-law, Marie and Evelyn Clontz and a number of nieces & nephews. Kate is also survived by Linda McDowell who she loved like a daughter. Funeral services will be held 3 PM Sunday at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church with the Rev. Dr. Ronnie Owen officiating. Burial will follow in West Memorial Park. The following consider it an honor to serve as pallbearers: Wendy Reed, Jeff Hunter, Robin Palmer, Jason Hunter, Charles Hunter and Rodney Palmer. The family will receive friends 1:30 to 3 PM Sunday prior to the services at the church. Sandra and Mary Alice would like to thank the many friends whose support was invaluable during Kates illness.
