John H. Burgess

Candler John Harrison Burgess, 96, of 14 Owenby Road, went to be with the Lord on Thursday, September 13, 2018. A lifelong resident of Buncombe County, he retired in 1987 from the City of Asheville following 40 years of service, where at the time of his retirement, he served as an Animal Control Officer. He was of the Pentecostal faith. Mr. Burgess was a WWII US Army veteran, and landed in the third wave on Omaha Beach on D-Day in the battle of Normandy. He was the son of the late Robert Manson Burgess and Mary Martha Mattie Ledbetter Burgess and was the husband of Betty Byers Burgess who died in 1998. He was also preceded in death by his sisters, June Cannon, Lela Scott and Frances Crawford; brothers, Raymond and Hubert Burgess and nephew, Harold Cannon Surviving are his nieces, Dorothy Cannon of Vienna, VA, Clara Wersterfer of New Braunfels, TX, Nancy Penley and Sara Penley both of Leicester and Carolyn Ray of Candler; nephews, Bill Cannon, Johnny Cannon, Robert Cannon and Sam Cannon all of Candler and Mike Cannon of Asheville and a host of friends. Funeral services will be held at 12:30 PM Wednesday, September 19, 2018 in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home, with Pastor Harold Davis, Mr. Sam Cannon and Mr. David Ellison officiating. Military honors will follow at the funeral home chapel, conducted by the NC National Guard. Committal services will be held 2 PM Wednesday at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery with Mr. Johnny Cannon officiating. The family will receive friends one hour prior to services at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to: Faith Tabernacle, C/o Harold Davis, 160 Old Hwy 10 W, Marion, NC 28752.
