John Douglas "Doug" Stevens Sr.

Asheville - John Douglas Stevens, Sr., 77, of 68 Deaver Park Circle, died Sunday, March 7, 2004 at Memorial Mission Hospital. A native of Buncombe County and a resident for most of his life. Mr. Stevens retired in 1991 from the Asheville Housing Authority following over 20 years of service. He was a W.W. II U.S. Navy Veteran and the son of the late Jewell Francis Stevens and Carrie Fredona Lohman Stevens. Surviving are his wife, Betty Lou Ballard Stevens of the home; son, John Douglas Stevens, Jr. and wife, Martha of Atlanta, GA; daughters, Tina Thomas and husband, Randy of Asheville and Susan Ellege and husband, Mike of Asheville; grandchildren, Nicole and Isabella Stevens, Randy and Josh Thomas and Jordan Ellege; sisters, Mary Etta Wapinski of Columbia, SC and Airolee Stevens of Asheville and several nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home with the Rev. James Stewart officiating. Burial will be at Green Hills Cemetery with Military Graveside Rites conducted by the Buncombe County Veterans Council Volunteer Memorial Team. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
