Joe Sluder

Weaverville Joe Bunyon Sluder, age 88, of 169 Old Mars Hill Highway, went to be with his Lord on Monday, February 23, 2015. Mr. Sluder was born March 4, 1926 in the Leicester community of Buncombe County. He married Kathleen Bradburn in 1944. They recently celebrated their 70th Wedding Anniversary on August 26, 2014. He retired after 43 years from Burlington Industries in Woodfin. Joe was a lifelong member of Mountain View Freewill Baptist Church and loved gospel music, especially Blue Grass gospel and loved to travel and sing in various churches. In 1978, Joe and his sister, Margaret founded the Sluder Family Reunion. A son of the late Rev. Daniel Ervin and Hester DeWeese Sluder, he was also preceded in death by his brothers, Robert, Donald, George and Rev. Jennis Sluder; sisters, Lois Nesbitt, Bonnie Alexander and Margaret Ponder and son-in-law, Carl Luther. Surviving are his wife, Kathleen Sluder of the home; daughter, Doris Jolene Luther of Leicester; sons, Jerry and wife Pat, David, Danny and wife Kristie all of Weaverville and Doug of Candler; brother, Elbert Sluder and wife Gerald of Hendersonville; 8 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren and 2 great-great granddaughters. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 PM Thursday, February 26, 2015 at Mountain View Freewill Baptist Church with Rev. Anthony Fox and Doug Sluder (son) officiating. Burial will follow in the church cemetery with his grandsons serving as Pallbearers and the Meal Site Group of the Weaverville Council on Aging serving as Honorary Pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2:15 PM Thursday at the church.
