Betty "Jean" T. Becker was born in Walnut, N.C. July 30th, 1934 to Lawton (Tommy) and Nettie (Chick) Thomas who preceded her in death. She lived most of her life in Asheville and Brevard. She graduated from Brevard High School in 1952. Jean met the love of her life, George F. Becker of Gainesville, Florida, at a town square dance in Brevard the summer of 1951, and their romance continued for over 60 years. George passed away May 6th, 2014. They would have celebrated their 63rd anniversary in Sept. of 2015. Jean was a homemaker and lovingly raised 3 children in Asheville. She is survived by William Raymond (Bill) Becker and daughter-in-law Charlotte Byers Becker of Hickory, NC and granddaughter, Julie Becker Barnes, and husband Trent of Cornelius, NC; Robert George (Bobby) Becker and daughter-in-law Vicki Becker of Ocean Isle Beach, NC and granddaughters Samantha (Sam) Becker and Jessica Becker of Asheville, NC; Mary Gail Becker Broome and son-in-law Robert Broome of Harrisburg, NC and granddaughters Dr. Laura Broome Jackson and husband Chris of Branford, CT and Allison Broome of Harrisburg, NC as well as brothers Buck and Charles Thomas, sister-in-laws, brother-in-laws and numerous nieces and nephews. Jean was and is loved and cherished by many. She had a warm and bubbly personality making friends wherever she went. She was an active member of Malvern Hills Church for over 60 years where she was involved with the women's circle groups, bible study, nursery, Sunday school classes, the women's Presbytery and more. Jean was also very active in the Malvern Hills community. In later years, she worked for Calvary and First Presbyterian Church preschools. Some of Jean's many friends included ladies from the YWCA wives clubs that in later years were renamed the "Wild Wives Club." Her best friend of over 60 years, Shirley Guice, will miss her as well. Jean was also the biggest cheerleader and mom of the University of Florida Blue Ridge Gator Club. She loved to visit with friends, read, sing, dance, listen to music, sew, and cook. Her children have many fond memories of their mama including snow days which always included having hot chocolate and toll house chocolate chip cookies for them when they came inside. Summertime always brought strawberry and cherry pies and blueberry salad from George's fruit garden. Jean's chocolate chip pound cake, fudge, and egg salad recipes have been shared by many. Funeral Services will be 11:00 AM on Tuesday, June 9th, 2015 at Malvern Hills Presbyterian with Rev. Thomas M. Cox officiating. Burial will follow immediately at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends on Monday from 7:00 until 9:00 PM at Anders-Rice Funeral Home.
