Jack Newton Smith

Swannanoa - Jack Newton Smith, 81, of 137 Eastwood Ave, died Wednesday December 24, 2003 at Highland Farms Retirement Center. A lifelong resident of Buncombe County. He retired in 1983 following 38 years of service with Southern Railroad where at the time of his retirement was a switchman. He was a faithful member of Edgewood Baptist Church where member of the Faith Sunday School Class, sung in the church choir and was a WW II U.S. Army-Air Corp Veteran. He was a son of the late Floyd James and Ruby Newton Smith and was also preceded in death by his brother Thomas James Smith formerly of Asheville. Surviving are his wife of 55 years, Thursia Sellers Smith of the home; son, Larry Newton Smith of Fredericksburg, VA; daughter, Marcia Smith Deweese and husband, Richard of Southport, N.C.; sister, Mary Church of Asheville; brother, Bobby Ausburn Smith of Asheville; grandchildren, Joshua Smith, Katrina Smith, Leslie Smith and Melinda Smith. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Saturday in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home with the Rev. Charles Shelton officiating. Burial will be in Riverview Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
