Asheville Irene Powell Ray Army passed away at the age of 82 on Saturday, January 8, 2011 at the Baptist Retirement Home in Asheville after a long illness. Irene was born on August 25, 1928 in Covington, GA. She graduated High School and worked for Richs Department Store and the Atlanta Gas and Light Company. She married Brooks Ray and moved to Asheville in 1960 where she raised their two children. She worked for Pathologists Medical Laboratory as a Phlebotomist for many years and enjoyed working with all the physicians there. She was very active in the congregation of West Asheville Presbyterian Church where she sang in the choir. After 52 years of marriage, Brooks passed away on October 19, 1999. In 2002, she married Wilfred Army and joined Grace Episcopal Church in which he had been active for many years. Sadly, Will passed away September 19, 2009. Mrs. Army is a daughter of the late William Cleveland and Lillie Mae DeLong Powell. She is survived by her daughter, Melinda Brownlow of Hereford, TX; son, Ken Ray of Fletcher; granddaughters, Jynefer Watson of Hereford, TX; Sara Alexandra Olray of Asheville; sister, Betty Ann Todd of Carrollton, GA; brother, Roger Powell of Twain, CA; many nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held 2 P.M. Wednesday, January 12, 2011 at Grace Episcopal Church, Merrimon Avenue with Father Gary Coffey officiating. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Gardens of Memory. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 P.M. Tuesday, January 11, 2011 at Anders-Rice Funeral Home. Those who wish to, may contribute to the Alzheimers Association, Western Carolina Chapter, 31 College St, Asheville, NC 28801, in her name.
