Hugh Gus Rice

Candler - Hugh Gus Rice, 60, of 9 Honey Locust Lane, died Monday May 6, 2002 at his home following an extended illness. A lifelong resident of Buncombe County, he was the former owner and operator of White Pine and Patton Avenue Exxon and Rices Esso on Haywood Road. He attended Community Harvest Church of God in Candler. He was a son of the late James Hillard and Jennie Ann Miller Rice and was also preceded in death by his brother Jack Rice. Surviving are his daughter, Rhonda R. Dodson of Candler; Grandson, Anthony V. Dodson of Candler; sisters, Sarah Chaney and husband Jimmy of Asheville and Tommie Eller of Asheville; brother, Gene Rice of Asheville; several nieces and nephews and special sister-in-law, Viola Rice of Weaverville. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home with the Revs. Otis Clough and Ralph L. Reed officiating. Burial will be in Pisgah View Memorial Park with Scotty Rice, Mike Rice, Larry Ball, Clarence Jinks Bartlett, Bob Soesbee, Tommy Cordell and Vernon Franklin serving as pallbearers. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9:00 P.M. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Upper Hominy Fire & Rescue Department, P.O. Box 190, Candler, N.C. 28715
