Hazel Smith Goodwin, 81, went to be with the Lord on Friday, February 16, 2018 at Emerald Ridge Health Care Center. A native of Buncombe County and resident most of her life, she retired in 1999 from St. Josephs Hospital, formerly employed with Kellwood following 25 years of service and part time at the Biltmore Estate. She was a daughter of the late Roy and Beatrice Smith and was also preceded in death by her great grandson, Cody Goodwin; sister, Sandra Sisco and brother, Ted Smith. Surviving are her sons, James Alfred Al Goodwin (Barbara) of Candler and Kelly Wayne Goodwin of Asheville; grandchildren, Tonya Montgomery and Travis Goodwin; great-grandson, Jeramiah Montgomery; sisters, Gladys Embler (Zack) of Asheville, Dell Sams (Ivan) of Asheville and Sherry Worley (Dean) of Leicester; brothers, Allen Smith (Mary) of Leicester, Jimmy Smith (Shirley) of Old Fort and Terry Smith of Asheville and several nieces and nephews, especially Kandace and Breanna Worley. Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Monday, February 19, 2018 in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home with Rev. Dr. Ronnie Owen officiating. The family will receive friends from 3 to 5 PM Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Ashelawn Gardens of Memory. The family would like to express their sincere appreciation to the staff of Emerald Ridge, including Shelly, Terry and all the CNAs and Nurses for their love and support given to us during her stay.
