Florence Cathey

Asheville - Mary Florence Mehaffey Cathey, 82, of 380 Brevard Road went to be with her Lord Monday, July 26, 2010 at Aston Park Health Care Center. A native of Buncombe County. Her lifes work was serving in the ministry along with her husband, the late Rev. J.D. Cathey, Jr. She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church of which she, along with her husband, founded. She recently attended Gospel Tabernacle. Mrs. Cathey was a daughter of the late James Varnel Mehaffey and Daley Delpha Stamey Mehaffey and the wife of Rev. John Dow J.D. Cathey, Jr. who died January 16, 1990. Surviving are her children, Jonnie Smith, Donna Cathey, Michael Cathey and Anita Hunter; sister, Patsy Harris; brother, J.V. Mehaffey; step brother, Tommy Mehaffey; 8 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held 11 A.M. Friday in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home with Rev. Eugene Dodd and Rev. Michael Cathey (her son) officiating. Burial will follow in Ashelawn Gardens of Memory. The family will receive friends 7 to 9 P.M. Thursday at the funeral home.
