Asheville Thelma Evelee Flaxie Johnson Spencer, 85, of 25 Choo Choo Lane, went home and will be celebrating Christmas with her Lord, Wednesday December 17, 2008. A native of Saluda, NC. She had resided in Buncombe County most of her life, was a former Home Day Care Operator, a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church, the Azalea Lodge through Norfolk-Southern Railway and a former bowler with the Housewives Coffee League at Star Lanes. She was an avid gardener, loved to cook and sew and was a member of the Erwin Booster Club and a strong supporter and fan of Erwins Athletic Program. Mrs. Spencer was a daughter of the late Joe Isaac Johnson and Elzie Gosnell Johnson and the wife of George Hadley Spencer who died April 15, 2002. She was also preceded in death by her sisters, Brenda Whitman and Faye Johnson and brother, Willie B. Johnson. Surviving are her daughters, Charlotte Spencer, Bonita Spencer Mears & husband, James all of Asheville, Loretta Spencer Peake & husband, Burt of Knoxville, TN and Raelene Spencer Goforth & husband, Charles of Asheville; adopted daughters, Terri LaFevers & husband, Dennis and Linda Rogers all of Asheville; grandchildren, Hillary, B.T., Spencer & Christian Peake, Nicholas, Jonathan & Carly Rae Goforth, Lucas & Lindsey LaFevers; sisters, Lois Ross and Wilma Johnson both of Saluda; brother, Robert Johnson of East Flat Rock. Funeral services will be held 12:30 P.M. Monday at Mt. Carmel Baptist Church with Rev. Dr. Ronnie Owen and Mr. Ed Shoff officiating. Burial will follow in Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery. The family will receive friends 4 to 6 P.M. Sunday at Anders-Rice Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Mt. Carmel Baptist Building Fund, 200 Mt.
