Everett Rains

April 16, 1924 — August 13, 2017

Asheville Everett Ray Rains, 93, passed away Sunday, August 13, 2017 at Park Ridge Hospital. A native of Monticello, KY, Mr. Rains had resided in Buncombe County since 1942. He retired from the surgical department at the Charles George VA Medical Center in Oteen following 33 years of service, and following eight more years of service at Mission Hospitals. He served in the Medical Corps of the US Army during World War II, was a member of Merrimon Avenue Baptist Church and had attended Trinity Presbyterian Church for twenty years. Mr. Rains was a talented and gifted craftsman, building everything from cabinetry to dulcimers. Mr. Rains was the son of the late Newman Cleveland and Sopronia Elizabeth Brown Rains, and the husband of Kathleen Louise Rains, his wife of 70 years, who passed away December 14, 2013. He was also preceded in death by two sisters and three brothers. Surviving are several nieces, nephews, cousins and two sisters-in-law. Memorial services will be held at 12:30 PM Friday in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home, with Freeman Owle officiating. The family will receive friends from 11:30 12:30 PM Friday at the funeral home. Inurnment services will be held at 2:00 PM Friday at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, with military graveside rites provided by the NC National Guard Honor Guard. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to MANNA Food Bank, 627 Swannanoa River Road, Asheville, NC 28805, or to the ABCCM, 20 Twentieth Street, Asheville, NC 28806.
