Asheville – Eberhard “Eb” George Preuninger, 82, entered his eternal home in the presence of the Lord on Tuesday, April 16, 2024, while surrounded by his loving family.
He was born on February 14, 1942, in Stuttgart, Germany, and grew up in Ohio, graduating from the University of Cincinnati. He served in the Ohio National Guard and worked at a number of hospitals across the East Coast, retiring from Mission Hospital in 2006. Eb always wore a smile, and his humor would brighten the day of all those around him. He said that he retired into the Asheville Municipal Golf Course, pursuing his lifelong passion of leisure and golf. He and his wife enjoyed many trips to Hilton Head where he saw more sand on the golf course than on the beach.
Eb was a longtime member of Covenant Reformed Presbyterian Church, having joined in 1987. He served as a Deacon since 1992 and enjoyed many mornings of fellowship with the group “ROMEOs” (Retired Old Men Eating Out). Eb had a special gift of connecting with the youth of the church and shared a “Secret Handshake” that even the closest adults around him did not know.
Eb was a son of the late Eberhard Frik and Martha Gist Montgomery Frik Preuninger. He was also preceded in death by his siblings: Mary Lee Telles and husband Lee, Stephen Preuninger, Martin Preuninger; and brothers-in-law: Robert Hisrich, and John Fitzwater.
Those left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 57 years, Julie Anne Fitzwater Preuninger; children: Todd Preuninger and wife Michelle and son Elias, Elisabeth Turner and husband David; siblings: Sibyl G. Towner and husband Dick, Bettina Hisrich; sister-in-law, Chantal Preuninger; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends.
A memorial service will be held at 3 PM on Saturday, April 27, 2024, at Covenant Reformed Presbyterian Church followed by a reception. Rev. Sean McCann and Rev. Bob Drake will officiate. The service will be streamed live to the church website. A private burial will take place at a later date in Ohio.
The family will receive friends on Saturday from 2 till 2:45 PM at the church.
Honorary pallbearers will be the current and former Deacons of Covenant Reformed Presbyterian Church.
