Candler - David L. Woods, Jr., 68, of Candler died Monday September 30, 2002 at Mountain Area Hospice. A native of Greene County, TN, he had lived most of his life in Buncombe County and Panama City, FL. He was retired from American Enka Corp. after 30 years of service. He was a member of New Morgan Hill Baptist Church, an U.S. Navy veteran and for the past 22 years he was owner and operator of Mt. Pisgah Hot Air Balloons. He was a son of the late David L. Woods, Sr. and Louise Anderson Woods. Surviving are his wife, Erma Woods of the home; daughters, Sheila M. Plemmons of Candler, Rowena M. Brown of Kernersville, NC, Teresa W. Harmon of Shelby, Karen W. Tipton of Marion and S. Michelle Massie of Asheville; son, Michael Lee Massie of Candler; brother, Charles Woods and wife, Virginia of Chester, VA; 14 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren and very close friend, Danny Smith. Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home with the Revs. Bill Plemmons and Roy Houston officiating. Burial will be in the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery, Black Mountain with military rites conducted by the Buncombe County Veterans Council Memorial Team. Pallbearers will be R. Addison M. Brown, Brandon Lee Parker, Jimmy Lee Plemmons, Danny Smith, Jerry Alexander, Jimmy Bowers and Greg West. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
