David C. Shope

July 31, 1938 — October 22, 2017

West Asheville David Carroll Shope, 79, of 89 Madeline Avenue went to be with his Lord Sunday, October 22, 2017 at the NC State Veterans Home. A native of Haywood County and resident of Buncombe County for most of his life. He was a son of the late Garrett Hobert Shope and Bertha Louellen Miller Shope and the husband of 39 years to Margaret Angeline Burleson Shope who died November of 1999 and Berniece Evitt Shope who died November 2015. He was also preceded in death by 7 siblings. Mr. Shope retired in August 2003 following 35 years of service with Blue Ridge Paper Products (Champion Paper Co.) and served in the US Marine Corps. He was a member of Trinity Baptist Church where he served as Deacon and former member for 40 years of Sunrise Baptist Church where Deacon and Sunday School Class Teacher. Surviving are his daughter, Lisa Shope Marrow (Eric) of Asheville; son, David Carroll Shope, II (Jennifer) of Riceville, TN; grandchildren, Colby Shope (Taylor) of Canton, Caitlin, Callie and Carlie Shope all of Candler and Michael and Margaret Marrow both of Asheville; brother, James (Red) Shope (Gail) of Candler; sister Ruth Shope of Michigan; several nieces and nephews and special friend, Bill Wooten of Candler. Funeral services will be held at 2 PM Tuesday, October 24, 2017 Trinity Baptist Church with the Rev. Allen Rash, Rev. Davis Plemmons and Rev. James Hutchinson officiating. Burial will follow at Burleson Cemetery in Barnardsville with the Rev. Jackie Collins officiating. Military Graveside rites will be conducted by the US Marine Corps. The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM Monday at Trinity Baptist Church. In lieu of flowers memorials may be made to the ABCCM Veterans Restoration Quarters, 20 20th Street, Asheville, NC 28806.
