Asheville - Daniel Alexander Dan Kanipe, 84, formerly of 48 Oregon Avenue, passed away Friday, January 2, 2008 at Magnolia Health Care Center. A lifelong resident of Buncombe County, Mr. Kanipe was a graduate of Lee Edwards High School, in the Class of 1942. He then joined the US Army Air Corp for a total of 37 months. He served in the Pacific Theater on the islands of Siapan and Tinian in the Marianas for 16 months. He retired from The Asheville Citizen-Times as a press operator and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church. Mr. Kanipe was the son of the late James Lafayette and Dorothy Whitt Kanipe. Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Betty Mashburn Kanipe, of the home; son, Michael Steven Kanipe of Asheville; grandchildren: Deana Marie Shelton and husband Dillan and Michael Adam Kanipe and wife Ashley; great-grandchildren: Gracie and Lucas Kanipe; sister, Virginia Thompson of Asheville; brothers: James Albert Kanipe and wife Barbara and Earl Charles Kanipe, all of Asheville. A memorial service will be held at 2 PM Tuesday in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home, with the Rev. Don Welborn officiating. Military honors will be provided by the NCNG Honor Guard. The interment will be held at the Western Carolina State Veterans Cemetery at a later date. The family will receive friends from 1-2 PM Tuesday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Calvary Baptist Church, 531 Haywood Road, Asheville, NC 28806.
