Candler D.G. Young, Jr., 89, passed away peacefully Friday, June 14, 2013 at the home of his son in North Wilkesboro. He was born November 26, 1923 in Haywood County to the late DeLloyd George and Bessie Smathers Young. He was also preceded in death by his two wives, Frances Hall Young and Lillie Jill Watkins Young; brother, Bill Young formerly of Augusta, GA; special friend, Jim Wilkie and grandson, Donald James Young. Mr. Young was a WW II Veteran of the US Navy and retired from Peebles Oil Company where he had served as a truck driver. He loved working on cars and lawn mowers as a hobby and making people laugh. Surviving are his sons, Don and wife, Marie of Arden, Terry and wife, Debbie of North Wilkesboro (Millers Creek) and Charles and wife, Barbara of Candler; step children from his second wife, Mac Watkins, Betty Orr and Jimmy Joe Watkins; 6 grandchildren and 7 great grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 11 AM Tuesday at Pisgah View Memorial Park, with the Rev. David Honeycutt officiating. Pallbearers will be Don Young, II, Roger Dale Young, Chris Miller, Jason Wood, Joe Chasteen and David Smathers. The family will receive friends from 9:30 to 10:30 AM Tuesday at Anders-Rice Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Wilkes County Hospice, 1907 West Park Drive, North Wilkesboro, NC 28659.
