Catherine Mae Beck

West Asheville Catherine Mae Beck, 76, of 7 Rex Drive went to be with her Lord on Thursday, April 15, 2010 at the Courtyard Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. A native of Jackson County, she had resided in Asheville for the past 67 years. She was a 1951 gruaduate of Lee Edwards High School, attended Mars Hill and Gardner Webb Colleges, graduated from Columbia Bible College and received her Masters Teacher Certificate from Childrens Ministry Institute in April 2003. She joined Child Evangelism Fellowship in 1995, serving as volunteer, committee member, Missionary and in September 2003 became Director of the Greater Asheville Chapter of Child Evangelism Fellowship. During this time, she had the opportunity to teach Bible to children through the Day Care at West Asheville Baptist Church and through the Back Yard Bible Clubs. She was a member of West Asheville Baptist Church where she was a member of the Friendship Sunday School Class, was a member of the American Business Woman Association, was an avid crafter and former member of the Buncombe County Crafters. She was the daughter of the late Francis Bryson Beck and Mamie Bernise Queen Beck and was also preceded in death by two brothers, James O. Beck and Harold E. Beck. Surviving are her sister, Sybil B. Spivey of Asheville; niece, Marisa S. Oxner and husband Steve of Candler; great niece, Bailey Oxner of Candler and great nephew, Rev. Joshua Fowler and wife Susan of Greenville, SC. Although she never had children of her own, she loved working with children of all ages, teaching them the Bible. Funeral services will be held 11 A.M. Monday in the chapel of Anders-Rice Funeral Home with Rev. Joshua Fowler, Rev. Paul Travis and Rev. Stan Welch officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Park. The family will receive friends 6 to 8 P.M. Sunday at the funeral home and at other times the family will be at the home of her sister, Sybil Spivey, 446 N.
