Carroll Cordell

July 14, 1922 — July 25, 2013

West Asheville - Carroll Denton Cordell, 91, a native of Western North Carolina and a long-term resident of West Asheville, made his journey to Heaven on July 25th. Most recently a resident of Aston Park Health Care Center for over 7 years, he quickly and quietly slipped away after a short period of declining health. In life, Carroll was an outstanding man a man with love for his friends, family, and community. After growing up in Canton, NC, Carroll served his country as a member of the U.S. Army during World War II. After the war, he returned home to Canton and worked for many years as an accountant at Champion Paper Mills. Upon retirement his love of people led him to a position of door greeter at several local retail stores always meeting customers at the door with a heartfelt welcome and a warm, honest smile. Carroll was a man of strong faith who loved God and his fellow man with a generous and caring spirit. He was a long-time member and organist at the Asheville Wesleyan Methodist Church. A talented musician, Carroll shared his gift by singing and playing the piano throughout the community including at nursing homes in the Asheville area like Aston Park long before he became a resident there. Carroll was a devoted husband of 53 years, a role model for three children, a grandfather to three, and great-grandfather to one. He was the son of the late Alsie and Clementine Pressley Cordell and was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, and three sisters. Carroll leaves a legacy of family to both mourn his loss and celebrate his gifts. Surviving are his wife, Wanda Ramsey Cordell; sons, Phil Cordell of Memphis, TN and Max Cordell (Joan) of Jacksonville, FL; daughter, Marsha Kuykendall of Candler, NC; three grandchildren, Angela Bilger (David), Jonathan Cordell (Charity) and Elizabeth Scott (Trey) and one great grandson, Andreas Bilger. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, July 30, 2013 from 1 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. at Anders-Rice Funeral Home in West Asheville, followed by a funeral service at 2 p.m. in the Anders-Rice Chapel. Pastor Josh Tietje will officiate. Interment will immediately follow at Forest Lawn Memorial Park. Carroll was a man who enjoyed music, travel, sweet treats, sharing his love of God, and bringing smiles to others. So in that spirit, the family requests that flowers and plants be potted in containers so that they can be shared with Carroll's many friends at Aston Park Health Care after the service. This lasting reminder of Carroll's love for his fellow residents and outstanding employees of Aston Park will surely make him smile.
