Burnice S. Harwood

Asheville - Burnice S. Harwood, 79, of 87 3rd. St., Martel Village, died Saturday June 22, 2002 at the Brian Center in Weaverville. A native and lifelong resident of Buncombe County, he worked at the Newport News Ship Yard during WWII and worked 21 years for North State Building Materials and was the caretaker for Elk Mountain Cemetery for 33 years. He was a son of the late Lee Jay and Arey Harwood. He was also preceded in death by a son, David Lee Harwood. Surviving are his wife, Virginia Landers Harwood of the home; sons, Kenneth Woody Harwood of Rutherfordton and Harvey Jay Harwood of Woodfin; Sisters, Jennie and Dorothy Harwood both of Woodfin; grandsons, Lee and Steve Harwood and granddaughter, Jennifer Harwood. Graveside services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Tuesday at Elk Mountain Cemetery with the Rev. Jim Chrisawn officiating. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 P.M. Monday at Anders-Rice Funeral Home.
