Bill K. Matthews

November 4, 1927 — January 9, 2006

Asheville Bill K. Matthews, 78, of 46 Deerwood Drive, joined the church triumphant on Monday, January 9, 2006 at his residence following an extended illness. A native of Buncombe County, he was a 1944 graduate of Lee H. Edwards High School and a graduate of Asheville Biltmore College. He was formerly employed with the Asheville Citizen-Times from 1943 to 1978. He then moved to Greenville, SC, and retired from the Greenville News Piedmont as the Production Director in 1987. Mr. Matthews was a member of St. Pauls United Methodist Church, where he was a charter member of the Peace Sunday School Class. He was a US Navy Veteran of World War II. Mr. Matthews was the son of the late Myrtle Garren Matthews and the husband of Beverly Waters Matthews, who passed away October 5, 1997. He was also preceded in death by his twin sister, Betty Matthews, and his brother, Rowan Matthews. Surviving are his son, W. Creighton Matthews and wife Deborah of Conway, SC; his daughter Mary Ann Matthews of Asheville; and three grandsons: Creighton Matthews, Jr. and wife Kristy and Christopher Matthews, all of Lexington, KY, and Kelly Matthews of Los Angeles, CA. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 PM Thursday at St. Pauls United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Skipper Watwood officiating. Burial will be in Green Hills Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 5-7 PM Wednesday at Anders-Rice Funeral Home.
