Asheville - Betty Ann Holcombe, 68, of 49 Mildred Avenue died Monday, December 31, 2001 at her home after a long and courageous battle with cancer. Mrs. Holcombe was born in Buncombe County April 18, 1933. She was very active in many community organizations including West Asheville Little League and the West Asheville Youth Basketball League. She was a long time member of Sandhill Baptist Church. She retired as manager of the Salvation Army Thrift Store where she worked for more than 15 years. She was preceded in death by her father, Cecil Alonzo Kent, Sr., brother, Cecil Alonzo Kent, Jr. and her husband, Calvin Littleberry Holcombe, who also died from cancer in 1989. Those left to carry her memory to future generations include: her mother, Evie Kent, of Woodfin; two sons, Lonnie Holcombe and wife Judy of Asheville and Steven Holcombe and wife Libby of Swannanoa: five daughters, Darlene Dyer and husband Gerald of Candler, Pamela Holcombe of Floral City, Fl., Tammy Graczyk and husband Dan of Spring Hill, Fl. , Cassandra Love and husband Andy of Candler and Suzi Baggett and husband Brian of Monahans, Tx.: two stepsons. Calvin Leroy Holcombe and wife Susan of Winston Salem and Wayne Holcombe and wife Kathy of Strongsville, Oh.; one stepdaughter, Janci Jo Crosby of Jacksonville, Fl.; three sisters, Estella West and husband Bruce of Asheville, Naomi Hensley of Manning, S.C. and Minnie Woody of Leicester; one brother, Calvin Kent and wife Evelyn of Woodfin; 26 1/2 grandchildren and 24 1/2 great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday at Anders-Rice Funeral Home with the Revs. Jerry Kent and Jim Stroupe officiating. Burial will be in Ashelawn Gardens of Memory. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home and at other times at the home.
