Annie Lou Logan

Winter Park, FL - Annie Lou Logan lived on this Earth for 99 years, 10 months, and 3 days, unable to make it to her 100th birthday, predictably and forcefully deciding that life in a hospital bed was not worth living. She died on January 4, 2013. For the last 19 years of her life, Annie Lou lived happily and independently at Winter Park Towers, Winter Park, Florida, where she served at various times as librarian and as treasurer of her floor. Annie Lou was born in Birmingham, Alabama, on March 1, 1913, the third of five children of Walter A. Bell and Bertha Summers Bell. She is predeceased by her parents, her sister, Pauline Bault and Paulines husband Bob, and her brothers, Walter and Bill and Bills wife Margaret. Her brother Charles and his wife Jo live in Greenville, South Carolina. Annie Lou was married to William B. Logan in 1937, until his death in 1984. Annie Lou and Bill had two children, Susan Rentz of Dallas, and Bill, Jr. (Chris) of Columbus, Ohio. Annie Lou also had five grandchildren, Heather Logan Melick (Greg) of Columbus, Julie Rentz Vogel (CJ) of Dallas, USAF Lt. Col. Scott Logan (Angela) of Niceville, Florida, Tracy Rentz of San Francisco, and Todd Logan (Tracy) of Cincinnati. Annie Lou had eleven great grandchildren. Annie Lous father was a railroad conductor, and her mother was a seamstress, but Annie Lous parents believed in the importance of hard work and of getting a good education for their childrenvalues which they passed along to Annie Lou and to her siblings. An Asheville, North Carolina, newspaper article from June, 1930, announcing her many high school honors, quoted her teachers as describing Annie Lou as quiet and unassuming, an apt description for this fine lady; yet she maintained an active and sharp mind throughout her life. Annie Lou was salutatorian of her high school class of 200 at Lee H. Edwards High School. She was an honors graduate of Cecils Business College in Asheville, where she then taught business courses for several years during the 1930s. She moved to Washington D.C. to take a job with the U.S. Forest Service, where she re-established a friendship with Bill Logan, who was working for Western Union, and taking school courses in the evening. After both returned to Asheville, they were married, and in 1948 moved to Columbus where Bill was a professor in the Department of Education at Ohio State University for 19 years, and was named Emeritus Professor in 1967. They then moved to Babson Park, Florida, where Bill served as President of Webber College until his retirement. Annie Lous children remember her fondly as a den mother for cub scouts, a volunteer at their schools, active in their church, coordinator of family activities, hostess for college activities while in Columbus and Babson Park, and as an expert bridge player until late in 2012. Annie Lous family honors her memory and the memory of their father, and their commitment to education and hard work, which continues to prevail in the family. Graveside services will be held 11 AM Saturday, January 12, 2013 at Green Hills Cemetery with Dr. James Layman officiating.
