Aida Thelma Lind Smith

February 12, 1923 — August 20, 2004

Asheville - Aida Thelma Lind Smith, 81, of 82 Oakwood Place passed away Friday, August 20, 2004. Ida was born in Brownsville, Texas and was assisted into this world by her own grandfather, A.G. Padilla who was the attending physician. She was the daughter of the late Marie Guadalupe Padilla Lind Smith and Carl John Lind. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Corrine Lind. Ida loved to fly and in her younger years was active in the Civil Air Patrol. She was a member of St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church for approximately 60 years and a member of the Catholic Daughters. However, she was very ecumenical in spirit and loved to attend services at the Salvation Army in West Asheville and other Asheville churches when she was invited. After she retired from Mission Hospital she became active in the Senior Games and won many medals. In 1998, she won 1st place in Tap Dancing on the local level in the Hendersonville Senior Games and 2nd place in the NC Senior Games in Raleigh. She took lessons to be a clown and loved to visit other senior citizens and make them laugh. Overcoming the hardships of a divorced mother she instilled in her children where there is a will, there is a way. She is survived by her sisters, Charmaine Nelson of Savannah, GA and Mary Ellen Reiper of San Antonio, TX; her sons and daughters-in-law, Charles W. Smith, Jr. and wife Judy and Ben N. Smith and wife Karen all of Charlotte; her daughter Rebecca and son-in-law, Nelson B. Allison of Arden; her grandchildren, Charles W. Chuck Smith, III and wife Pam, Thurston Smith, Michele Lane and husband Mac, Ben and Brian Atticus Allison; her great grandchildren, Carson, Cannon and Anna Lane; numerous nieces and nephews. A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 10 AM Wednesday at St. Joan of Arc Catholic Church with Father John Pagel officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the Mass in the Parish Center. Interment will be at 12:30 PM Wednesday at Forest Lawn Memorial Park, Enka. Flowers are appropriate or memorials may be made to Meals on Wheels, 146 Victoria Rd., Asheville, NC 28801.
