Chief Sales arrived at my house with other fire rescue folks back in 2001 to tend to a heart problem I was having at the time. His concern and prompt action contributed to saving my life. I was always very grateful to Chief Sales for that. After that we would frequently see him in the community always with a big smile and friendly manner. We will miss him. Our condolences to his family.

We have been blessed to know this man for many years. He (and his family) are special to many folks not only in the Fairview and Reynolds communities but to all who had the pleasure of knowing them. Richard will be sorely missed by many but he leaves a tremendous legacy of love, kindness and service to others on this side of eternity. Proud to call him a brother in Christ who best exemplifies Proverbs 22:1. And on the other side of eternity is a great gathering of the Saints and Our Lord Jesus greeting Richard with "well done, my faithful servant."

Blessings to each of you. Our hearts go out to the family, the extended fire department family, and to all touched by Chief Sales' selflessness, including at his alma mater, A. C. Reynolds High School. Thank you for sharing Chief Sales with the community.

Gwen Gentry Clark contributed this message on Friday, April 13, 2018:

My heart goes out to everyone in the Sales Family. I have 33 years of great memories and laughs with my FH Brother Richard. From the moment we met in the Fall of 1984 at NC State, I always knew that the connection between us was string. From the fact that we were Brother and Sisters in christ, Classmates at NCSU, In the same Pledge Class for FarmHouse, to the fact we were proud to be from Western NC, our times together are forever burned in my heart and mind. So many times spent together sharing laughing, eating great food, solving problems and saying that if everyone was like us then the world would be "perfect". I often think that I was the female version of Richard and he was my male counterpart. We shared the same "tell it like it is" attitude and we liked for things to "get done". God allows very special people in your life and Richard was just that. I did not want my given name spoken very much but it was lawyers fine with me to hear "Hello Mary G". Those phone calls to see if the roads were safe to travel to get to ASU, the call that one of us were traveling to where the other was, the honest relationship of a brother and ester we shared. My life will always be better and blessed because of Richard Sales. Sending my love, prayers and a reminder that if you need me to let me know. my home number is 828 733 9165. At any time just call. I am "on the way" to Boone. Thank you all for sharing one of the most precious souls with me. My life is blessed beyond measure. I know we will meet again where the soul never dies. It is well---------------- hugs and prayers.

Praying and thinking of you during this time. Richard is loved and respected for his kindness and integrity. He promised me that if the fire department was ever called to the school for me he would not let me die in the school. He would take me out to the green grass and blue sky! We always laughed about it. May God give each of you His peace!

Richard, It is with great sadness that I post this to you and your family. You will be missed by so many. I am praying for your family and their life ahead without you. Richard was so gracious and gave freely of himself and and his time. I have know Richard for many years as we grew up in the Reynolds Community. I had the pleasure of working with this fine man for about 10 years developing WNC SAFE KIDS. He worked tirelessly with a small group of us that believed in this project. The WNC SAFE KIDS grew and received many awards. I am so appreciative of his help and dedication to this project and of the many others he was involved in. Your shoes are big and will be hard to fill. I am comforted to know that we will meet again one day. Rest in Peace my friend.

I will never forget how he made everyone feel included, as EMS employees we were frequently treated as unwanted intruders in the firehouses we resided, but never at his house. Watching the kindness and humor, showed me what a leader could be. I enjoyed the mornings spent at the table downstairs talking with him and others, and the many one on one conversations over the years. I alwats felt that Reynolds was my second home and spenr most of time during other ems assignments trying to get back to Reynolds. It was harder to leave Reynolds fire deor, then it was to leave ems. That was due to the way he ran his house and the environment he created. He touched more lives than you can imagine and was loved by many. Your loss is felt by many.

Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days, all the days of my life.
Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days, all the days of my life.

And I shall dwell in the house of the Lord, forever
And I shall feast at the table prepared for me!
